PORSCHE 912
The Porsche 912 is a sports car that was manufactured by Porsche of Germany between 1965 and 1969. The 912 was an entry level car sharing the same body with a 911 but with equipped with a 4 cylinder engine delivering 90 hp. During its production run from 1966 to 1969 over 32,000 cars were manufactured.
History
Concerned that sharp price increase that would come from the move from a 4 cylinder 356 to a 6 cylinder 911, Porsche decided to introduce a cheaper alternative – the 912. The 912 used the same body as the 911 and was powered by a 1.6 liter, four-cylinder engine used in the 356SC of 1964-1965.
Distinctive Features
The 912 quickly found favor with sports car enthusiasts. Attractive features of the car included a lightweight aluminum body, fully synchronized four-speed transmission, a single dry clutch, and electrical system upgrade to a 12-volt.
Performance
The smaller engine resulted in a 250 pounds lighter weight and the car produced 102hp with a top speed of 116 mph. The rear wheel drive with semi trailing rear suspension, torsion bars and swing axles gave the car better control and balance around curves and bends.
